Daughter of the King Guest Post

So much of history is written from the male perspective. The story of wars and power struggle and kings seem to dominate our history books. When I discovered the story of eight hundred desperate young women recruited by the King to populate Canada, my first thought was, “Why haven’t I heard about this before?” Orphans, women in servitude or extreme poverty, they certainly didn’t have an easy life in Seventeenth Century France. But then an unbelievable offer presented itself. Agree to move to Canada, and the King will provide you a new life. Offered a trousseau of clothing and linens, a dowry, protection, and the opportunity to choose your own future. It was almost too far-fetched to believe.

I discovered that the Daughters of the King changed the future of North America, and that most every French Canadian can trace their roots back to at least one of these women, if not dozens. The moment I read that they held interviews to choose their husbands from a line of marriageable men, I knew this story needed to be written.

Much of this research was part of an ancestry search for my husband’s family. I found three dozen Daughter of the King in his direct family line. The story tugged at me a little stronger. I traced every one of those women’s lives, scouring the internet for birth and death records, marriage certificates, baptisms. Several women from his mother’s side originated in La Rochelle, on the western coast of France. Here’s where the story took another turn. Much of La Rochelle were Huguenots (French Protestant) resisting the call to convert to Catholicism. They suffered endless torment to fight for their faith. Some of the Daughters of the King were born Huguenots and converted to Catholicism to save themselves. I was hooked.

Intrigued with the idea that my story’s antagonist would be Isabelle’s own country, her Huguenot world started to take shape. High stakes drop the reader into instant tension, and it only grows from there —just like the real world these women lived in. This is such an epic story, I knew early on that this would be a series. The trilogy is called the Resisting the Crown series. The heart of the story is really Isabelle’s fight for her faith. Her own freedom from her family and her king. She must go through a series of challenges to discover what she really believes and if she has the strength to fight for it. Isabelle inspired me through this writing process, and I hope readers feel inspired by her too.
