Author Insights

Zara appears in several stories of the Enigma Series as a opportunistic Darknet hacker and one of our original characters that readers love to hate. Like our readers, we both loved and despised her choices and actions in the stories. The complexity of her character evolved from her rough beginnings and ill-treatment by despicable men. Survival made her hard and cynical—focused only on her payday and next mark.

Buzz Buswald II is affectionately known as Buzz. He first appears in The Enigma Factor as Jacob Michael best friend through school years and beyond. Buzz comes from wealth, well-educated, yet somewhat lazy in fulfilling work requests. Along his journey, Buzz has made some bad choices with unfortunate outcomes.

These two characters received several comments from readers from the various books in which they appears. In The Enigma Always, we decided to have their paths cross. We wanted to know if they were redeemable for the series.

Yes, Zara is working for a Russian mobster. True, she engineered a diamond heist of €5 million, and yes, she never tells the truth even when love is at stake.

Buzz has a heart but lousy track record in picking women. His friends are limited, and his family distances themselves. His attitude and short cuts of using others delayed him from growing into a positive contributing adult.

When these two misfits vanish at the end of The Enigma Always, Burkey saw readers asking what happened to these two players. We decided that their story needed telling. The starting point came from this audible segment from this novel. YouTube link: https://youtu.be/fE3U7FrIqe8

These two were off to a shaky journey on a road less traveled right from the start. Buzz asked Jacob if they had  any chance at all. You’ll need to get this novel to how that worked out. We did create the short story to focus on Zara and Buzz and see if they can exist together and grow up. Love’s Enigma tracks the bumpy ride of these two extreme opposites in their quest to be ordinary lovers working on a dream.

About the Short Story

Hopelessly in love and desperately fearful!

Zara and Buzz are products of vastly different upbringings. Their chance meeting ignites attraction they must explore. Even with lies and omissions, they find themselves falling in love. For them, it’s a good thing that love is blind.

A defining incident offers the opportunity to explore a future together. They move away from everything for a fresh start. They optimize their experiences to build a life they never imagined in the Caribbean. Then their demons surface.

Zara distrusts love because of her past. She’s afraid to commit anyone. Buzz wants a new partner, better than what he’d lost.

Will Zara slip through his fingers? Can they honestly bury their past? And, if those secrets are shared, will their love be destroyed?
